Established in 1892 under the patronage of Maharaja Chamaraja Wadiyar X, the zoo was originally created as a royal menagerie. It was opened to the public in 1909 and has since grown into one of India's most modern and well‑maintained zoological parks. The zoo is known for its successful breeding programs, especially for giraffes, white tigers, and Indian rhinos. Spanning 157 acres, it houses over 1,200 animals across 168 species, with large, naturalistic enclosures and a dedicated veterinary hospital.
