The current palace was commissioned in 1897 after a fire destroyed the old wooden structure. Completed in 1912, it was designed by British architect Henry Irwin blending Hindu, Islamic, Rajput, and Gothic styles – a classic example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. The palace features intricate rosewood carvings, Belgian stained glass, and a magnificent Durbar Hall with a gold-plated ceiling. The royal family (Wadiyars) still uses a portion of the palace.
Notable highlights: the Ambavilasa Hall (private durbar), the jewel-encrusted golden throne (displayed during Dasara), the Kalyana Mantapa (marriage pavilion), and the Gombe Thotti (doll’s pavilion) showcasing European and Indian dolls.
The public audience hall with ornate pillars and a stunning painted ceiling.
Rare photographs and paintings of the royal family and British dignitaries.
A fascinating collection of dolls from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Japanese and French pieces.
The intricately carved, jewel-studded throne of the Wadiyars – only assembled during Dasara.
Several historic temples within the palace fort, including the Shwetha Varahaswamy temple.
Every evening (except Sundays and government holidays), the palace grounds come alive with a spectacular 45‑minute show narrating the 600‑year legacy of the Wadiyar dynasty. The interplay of coloured lights on the palace facade, accompanied by dramatic commentary and music, is a must-experience. Tip: Arrive by 6:30 PM for good seating. Tickets are sold at the palace counter from 6:00 PM onwards.
